9-Seater Sprinter vs. 8-Seater V-Class: Which Van Is Better for Your Trip?
The 9-seater Sprinter and the 8-seater V-Class XL are both excellent options for group travel in Europe — but they are built for different priorities. The Sprinter wins on pure space and transport utility, while the V-Class focuses on luxury, easier city driving, and better winter handling.
If you're deciding between these two, this guide breaks down the exact differences in size, luggage capacity, height, fuel use, and day-to-day usability.
Capacity and Size
The Sprinter carries 9 passengers vs. 8 passengers in the V-Class. It is also significantly larger overall, measuring around 20 feet in length.
- Sprinter luggage area: approximately 5 x 5 feet behind the last bench
- Sprinter cargo volume: up to about 191 cubic feet
- V-Class XL cargo volume: up to about 50 cubic feet
- V-Class trunk dimensions: around 2.5 x 4.5 feet
Tip: We offer the 8-seater V-Class XL. The shorter V-Klasse looks similar, but with much less cargo space.
Height and Daily Use
One of the biggest practical differences is roof height:
- 9-seater Sprinter: about 8 feet tall
- 8-seater V-Class: about 6.25 feet tall
Because of this, the Sprinter is usually not suitable for many underground and indoor parking garages. The V-Class is much easier for city parking and tighter urban environments.
Performance Features and Winter Driving
The V-Class is available with 4WD, which makes it a strong choice for alpine and winter travel where roads can be wet, icy, or snowy. Most Sprinter configurations are not 4WD, and they can be more challenging to drive in snow even with winter tires.
Sprinters are also generally more sensitive to strong crosswinds because of their size and height, so route planning and speed management matter more on exposed highways.
Driver's License Requirements (USA License in Europe)
Both vehicles can be driven with a standard USA driver's license. Even though the Sprinter is larger physically, both models typically remain under the 3.5-ton category, so no commercial or special license is required for standard rentals in Europe.
Rental Rate, Fuel Use, and Toll Efficiency
In many cases, the daily rental price for a large Sprinter is similar to a premium V-Class. The key operating difference is fuel consumption: the Sprinter generally uses around 30% more fuel. Toll class is usually the same for both when the Sprinter remains under 3.5 tons.
Luggage Solutions Beyond the Trunk
If you need extra carrying capacity with a V-Class, we can equip vans with roof ski boxes and rear bike racks that fit even large mountain bikes or electric bikes. If your trip requires the most cargo volume with minimal compromises, the Sprinter is still the better base platform.
Storage Services in Germany and Austria
We also offer short-term storage for luggage and bulky sports gear you don't need every day of your trip. Storage is available at our Munich, Frankfurt, and Salzburg locations for a minimal fee.
